Expedition 33 Mission Overview

Expedition 33 was conducted aboard the ISS during the second half of 2012. The mission involved investigations into human physiology in space, technology testing, and continuing international cooperation in space habitation.

This mission saw a full six-person crew working together, allowing them to perform more than 240 experiments. It was a critical period for advancing research on human health, robotic systems, and space station maintenance.

Meet the 6 Crew Members

  • Sunita Williams (NASA) – Commander
  • Yuri Malenchenko (Russian Federal Space Agency) – Flight Engineer and Soyuz Commander
  • Akihiko Hoshide (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, JAXA) – Flight Engineer
  • Kevin Ford (NASA) – Flight Engineer
  • Oleg Novitskiy (Russian Federal Space Agency) – Flight Engineer
  • Evgeny Tarelkin (Russian Federal Space Agency) – Flight Engineer

Each crew member was an expert trained for specific scientific experiments, spacecraft operation, and station maintenance, reflecting the expedition’s international and multidisciplinary approach.

Detailed Roles and Responsibilities

Sunita Williams – Commander

Sunita Williams was the mission commander responsible for overall crew leadership and station operations. She managed day-to-day activities, ensuring mission objectives were met safely and efficiently. Williams also participated in spacewalks (EVAs) to repair and maintain external systems on the ISS, including replacing critical power components.

Yuri Malenchenko – Flight Engineer & Soyuz Commander

Yuri Malenchenko served dual roles as flight engineer and Soyuz spacecraft commander. His flight engineer duties involved monitoring space station systems and aiding in scientific research. As Soyuz commander, he led critical operations during launch, docking, and re-entry phases, demonstrating expertise in spacecraft piloting and crew safety.

Akihiko Hoshide – Flight Engineer

Akihiko Hoshide contributed to scientific experiments and station maintenance. Notably, he operated the Canadarm2 robotic arm to capture unmanned cargo spacecraft, an essential task for resupply missions. Hoshide also participated in three EVAs alongside Williams, addressing external technical issues such as coolant leaks.

Kevin Ford – Flight Engineer

Kevin Ford focused on station system operations and extensive scientific experiments. His role included research management and assisting with docking operations of visiting vehicles. Ford later assumed command of the ISS during Expedition 34, reflecting his leadership capabilities.

Oleg Novitskiy – Flight Engineer

Oleg Novitskiy joined the crew after launching on Soyuz TMA-06M. His first space mission involved contributing to station maintenance and scientific work. Novitskiy’s responsibilities included system monitoring and collaboration with international partners on research and vehicle operations.

Evgeny Tarelkin – Flight Engineer

Evgeny Tarelkin also arrived via Soyuz TMA-06M and worked closely with Novitskiy and Kevin Ford. His role was focused on maintaining life-support systems and scientific payloads, ensuring the stability and safety of the station environment for crew and experiments.

“Expedition 33’s crew exemplified the international teamwork that enables sustained human presence in space, each member performing critical roles that keep the ISS operational and productive.”
